Meet the dean Brian L. Hoh, M.D., M.B.A.
The Folke H. Peterson Dean’s Distinguished Professor at the UF College of Medicine
Brian L. Hoh, M.D., M.B.A., is a distinguished physician-scientist, educator and academic leader who has served UF for two decades. Prior to beginning as dean in August 2026, he served as chair of the nationally recognized Lillian S. Wells Department of Neurosurgery and chief of medical staff at UF Health Shands Hospital.
An internationally recognized leader in neurosurgery, Hoh has served as president of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, chaired major professional organizations and contributed extensively to advancing standards in patient care, research and education. He serves on the Board of Directors of the American Board of Neurological Surgery.
His record as a clinician-scientist includes more than 17 years of continuous National Institutes of Health funding and pioneering research focused on stroke, brain aneurysms and cerebrovascular disease. He was recognized as the nation’s highest NIH-funded neurosurgery investigator in 2021, 2023 and 2025 and his scientific contributions have advanced understanding of complex neurological diseases while helping improve outcomes for patients around the world. In 2024, the University of Florida College of Medicine awarded him Outstanding Research Scientist Award in Clinical, Data, or Artificial Intelligence Science.
Since joining the UF faculty in 2006, Hoh has helped elevate the institution’s national reputation through outstanding contributions in patient care, research, education and service. Under his leadership as chair, the Department of Neurosurgery achieved remarkable growth and national recognition in patient care, research and education — rising to the second-highest NIH-funded neurosurgery department in the country, and UF Health Shands Hospital ranking in the top 30 for neurology and neurosurgery in the U.S. News & World Report “Best Hospitals” rankings. His vision, dedication and commitment to excellence have helped advance the department’s reputation as a leader in neurosurgery while fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration and service.
He was part of a multidisciplinary team instrumental in establishing and developing the UF Health Comprehensive Stroke Center and launching the UF Health Mobile Stroke Treatment Unit program, bringing timely, expert and compassionate care to stroke patients in Florida.
He earned his undergraduate degree with honors from Stanford University and his medical degree with Alpha Omega Alpha honors from Columbia University, completing his residency and fellowship training in neurosurgery and endovascular neurosurgery at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School. He later earned an MBA with Beta Gamma Sigma honors from UF.
