Welcome to career chats!
We’re thrilled you’re participating in this opportunity to connect with UF College of Medicine Office of Graduate Program alumni for meaningful, one-on-one career conversations.
These 30-minute Zoom sessions are informal, student-driven, and designed to give you real-world insight from someone who has been in your shoes.
Your goal is simple: ask thoughtful questions, listen actively, and explore what’s possible.
Before the conversation
- Be Curious: Take time to explore your mentor’s bio, career path, and current role.
- Prepare: Write down 3–5 questions or topics you’d like to discuss so you can use your time intentionally.
- Be On Time & Professional: Log in a few minutes early, test your technology, dress appropriately for Zoom, and minimize distractions.
- Be Engaged: Keep your camera on (if possible), take notes, and show genuine interest.
- Relax: This is a supportive conversation — not an interview. Your mentor is here because they want to help.
Suggested questions & conversation starters
- What inspired you to choose your program, concentration, or department?
- How did you decide on your current career path?
- What’s something you wish you had known during graduate training?
- What does a “typical day” look like in your field?
- What were your biggest challenges during your program?
- What skills or habits helped you succeed?
- If you could go back, what would you do differently?
- How do you balance career goals with personal well-being?
Pro Tip: Don’t try to force a deep conversation. These chats are just the beginning. You may continue the connection later through email or the Gator Network if mutually interested.
Respecting boundaries
- Alumni mentors are here to share advice, not to offer internships, jobs, or references
- Only share what you’re comfortable discussing
- If you ever feel uncomfortable or experience concerning behavior, please reach out to our office, Alumni Affairs, at drgator@health.ufl.edu or call 352.273.7986.
Be mindful
These conversations provide an opportunity to connect across varied backgrounds and experiences. Be open, kind, and respectful. Recognize that we all bring our own perspectives to new relationships. Great mentoring occurs when both parties listen, remain curious, and approach each other with empathy.
